23 April 2010 - Gary Sargent of Gander is the winner of the Newfoundland Quarterly magazine's 2010 subscription prize draw. Mr. Sargent wins the landscape painting Barr'd Harbour (2008) by Jean Claude Roy. The draw was made by actor Mark O'Brien (Republic of Doyle) on CBC Radio's On the Go. This is the fourth time Mr. Roy has made such a generous donation to the NQ. Anyone who buys, renews or gives a subscription to the Quarterly is eligible for the draw. The Newfoundland Quarterly is a journal of culture and history that publishes four times a year. It is based on the Memorial University campus in St. John's. The NQ has official charitable donation status and appreciates all support. |

| St. George's (2007), 20” x 24”, Oil on Canvas. Jean Claude Roy studied at the Lycée Technique de Saintes, France, from 1960 to 1966. He came to know Newfoundland while working as a marine electrician on a French cable ship, and moved to St. John's in 1971. At this time, he began to paint seriously. In 1992, Roy returned to his childhood village in France, but has always maintained his ties to Newfoundland; since 1994 he has divided his time between the two places.
